Happy in Rio

By now you probably have googled Rio de Janeiro and found out lots of stuff. I did too and I found this great: http://www.travelpod.com/travel-blog-entries/henrikstrodl/round_the_world/1180742280/tpod.html (Mugged, drunk, sick, but happy in Rio!).

  1. Are there any scholarships or financial assistance programs for journalists covering the IAU General Assembly? I received approval from Lars Lindbergh Christensen to attend and cover the GA for the New Jersey newspaper where I work as a staff writer, but our economic situation is not that great, and the paper can't fund the trip for me. I'm a writer, amateur astronomer, member of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and a student in the Swinburne Astronomy Online program. I run "Laurel's Pluto Blog," a blog advocating the reinstatement of Pluto as a planet, which you can find at http://laurele.livejournal.com (this is independent of my work at the newspaper). Journalists are in a great position to fulfill the IAU goal of communicating astronomy with the public. I would love to go to Rio, but I need financial assistance to make this happen? Do you have any grant sources for journalists you could recommend? I would be happy to do additional writing coverage in exchange. You can reach me at laurelkornfeld@netzero.net

  2. As far as I know, reporters are usually paid by their own sources. If the NJ paper can't pay, sell it to someone else. You should pick a theme and make the trip worth funding it. Good luck!
